THE FOUNDER | Shalini Misra is an internationally acclaimed interior architect, designer, and property developer with over two decades of experience in creating exceptional spaces. A graduate of the Delhi School of Architecture and Planning and Columbia University, Shalini also studied Virtual Reality in Architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture. She is recognised as one of House & Garden's top 100 interior designers and actively contributes to the design community through committees including the British Institute of Interior Design and Tate’s South Asian Acquisition Committee. She is a trustee and mentor of the Vahani Scholarship Trust. Shalini Misra has spent nearly three decades championing exceptional craftsmanship, seeking out talented artisans for her interior design projects around the world. Driven by the belief that handmade objects enrich lives, she says, "Every space I design has a narrative, and to me, craft is about storytelling." This passion for craft and design has culminated in the creation of Curio, a platform showcasing the work of over 60 makers, designers, and artists who constantly push the boundaries of materiality, technique, shape, and form. Shalini Misra said: “The Shakti Design Residency is an ambitious initiative I have envisioned for quite some time. The timing feels particularly important now as we witness a global shift towards valuing craftsmanship and innovation in design. One of the unique aspects of this residency is our focus not just on artisanship, but also on entrepreneurship. India is increasingly recognised for its technology expertise and a willingness to embrace the role of design in creation of a better future. Likewise, partnering with Basic.Space was a natural choice, and all our jury members truly appreciate the importance of fostering a new vision of design. Our aim is to bring all these elements together to create a transformative and enriching experience for the participants.” |
CURIO | Curio is the embodiment of Shalini Misra's lifelong quest to champion craftsmanship. Growing up in India, Shalini was immersed in a culture rich with colour, tradition, and visible craftsmanship. Her experiences in Delhi, where street vendors also serve as makers, fueled her desire to integrate traditional practices into contemporary design. Curio brings together unique furniture, lighting, accessories, and art from across the globe, discovered by Shalini and her team, to celebrate human creativity and craftsmanship. Since founding Shalini Misra Limited in 1996, her practice has focused on high-end residential, hospitality, and commercial projects worldwide. Misra’s projects start with local artisans and artists, ensuring each space is infused with character, soul, and stories. Curio extends this philosophy by offering handcrafted objects that embody these narratives and are designed to be passed down through generations. Curio's mission is to spotlight both emerging talent and established masters, giving traditional skills contemporary relevance. Shalini Misra's homes in Delhi and London reflect this mission, featuring bespoke pieces that celebrate Indian and British craftsmanship. Curio aims to counter today's throwaway culture by offering objects that add depth and longevity to their stories. Looking ahead, Curio plans to offer bespoke pieces for collectors, further personalising the narratives of the objects they create. Shalini Misra continues to lead Curio as founder, creative director, and executive chair, driving its mission to celebrate and sustain global craftsmanship. |
